Sustainability

The vision for this business is to make products from vegetable tanned leather that last a lifetime. The products are designed with this goal in mind. Inbuilt obsolescence or fast fashion aren’t part of our DNA. It mightn’t be good for business, but we don’t want our products to wear out, so you are throwing them away in a few years’ time and buying repeatedly.  As an example, we have moved away from making belts with stitching as this eventually fails particularly where the buckle rubs over the years.

As you would probably be aware, that while there is a beef and dairy industry the alternative of turning hides into leather is to send them to landfill. By producing leather to make products such as belts, we are reducing landfill.

We use vegetable tanned leather as it is more environmentally friendly than the chrome tanning process.  The leather is treated with natural tannins derived from trees and plants. The tannins used in the process are eco-friendly and biodegradable, making this type of leather a great choice for those who are environmentally conscious and who value the unique look and feel of natural and sustainable materials. The process is also safer for those tanning the hides.

The name ‘vegan leather’ (or faux leather) implies that it is more sustainable. As faux leather is primarily made using synthetics this is not the case. Many faux leather products are not made with longevity in mind and are so cheap that it is more effort to look after them than it is throw them away and buy another. We see this as a false economy. As Benjamin Franklin once purported to have said "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten."

Solar panels on roof, part of our sustainable practices for eco-friendly leather production

Solar Power

Our workshop also has solar panels producing around 7,000 kWh of clean energy a year.  Way more than we would ever use handcrafting your belt.

J&H Leather Conditioner
